NYCHA Completes Enhanced Playground Project at Morrisania Air Rights

NYCHA recently marked the completion of a revitalized playground space in the Bronx’s Morrisania Air Rights community.

After the site was temporarily opened following some preliminary repairs in the summer of 2022, NYCHA and the project contractor performed a “total overhaul” of the play area this summer with input from the local resident association. Thanks to $250,000 in funding from NYCHA Operations, major construction work began in June and was completed by mid-October at the Bronx development, where more than 1,600 residents live.

The contractor installed new playground equipment and safety surfacing, while NYCHA’s Technical Resources and Special Repair Projects team installed various other features, such as new concrete tables with game boards and metal seating (with children- and adult-size furniture), improved security with new gates and enhanced lighting, painting, and landscaping. The resident association, led by President Tanya Pedler, was closely involved, selecting paint colors and specific play features, including a sensory exercise for children with special needs.

Ms. Pedler called the new playground a “game-changer for our community,” as well as a symbol of growth, connectivity, and well-being.

“Witnessing the joy on children’s faces as they explore the vibrant play area is truly heartwarming,” Ms. Pedler said. “The thoughtful design and inclusion of various play elements cater to different age groups, ensuring that every child in our community has a space to create lasting memories and build friendships. Personally, it’s incredibly gratifying to see this vision come to life, providing a safe and stimulating environment for our youngsters.”

NYCHA Project Manager Dave Valadez agreed, saying, “I think it’s a great thing for the whole community.”

Technical Resources Director Joe Militano added: “It’s always uplifting to be able to see something come to fruition that benefits the residents and which they can enjoy.”

Upgraded features of the Morrisania Air Rights playground include new painting and security gates, metal seating, and concrete tables for game boards.
