Jobs-Plus Coney Island Soft Launch at Surfside Gardens

Office Opens in Late February at 3026 Surf Avenue

NYCHA residents from Coney Island Houses, Coney Island I (Sites 4 and 5), and Surfside Gardens will now have a place close to home to get assistance with employment opportunities, educational advancement, and financial counseling at the new Jobs-Plus Coney Island.

The new Jobs-Plus site will be operated by NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability (REES) thanks to a $3.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Services for residents will include job search and placement support; assistance with resume writing and interviewing skills; virtual and in-person hiring events; education assistance such as referrals to vocational training and connections to GED programs; financial counseling, including credit improvement and debt reduction; and more.

Jobs-Plus is a proven place-based program that provides public housing residents 18 and older with services to build their skills and connections to employment or advancement opportunities so they can increase their incomes. There are currently 10 City of New York-funded Jobs-Plus sites citywide. This new investment from HUD will bring the total to 11 Jobs-Plus sites serving 46 NYCHA developments citywide.

Jobs-Plus Coney Island opens at 3026 Surf Avenue at the end of February; until then, residents can become Jobs-Plus members and take advantage of the program by visiting the Surfside Gardens Property Management Office at 2940 West 31st Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to the Jobs-Plus office hours at the management office, NYCHA’s Digital Vans will provide support outside 3026 Surf Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays on the following dates: February 20, February 24, March 3, March 6, March 10, March 13, March 17, March 20, March 24, March 27, and March 31.

“We are excited to expand this proven model by bringing a Jobs-Plus site to serve the residents of Coney Island Houses, Surfside Gardens, and Coney Island I (Sites 4 and 5),” said Michelle Raymie, Director of REES. “This generous award marks NYCHA’s second HUD-funded Jobs-Plus program, with the first at Pennsylvania-Wortman Houses in Brooklyn (from 2016 to 2022). We have seen firsthand how this program can help people get jobs, grow in their careers, save on rent, and receive a wide range of services, resources, and meaningful community connections that can help them and their families achieve economic growth and financial stability. We are truly thankful to HUD for this grant, and the NYCHA Jobs-Plus Coney Island team looks forward to serving residents over the next four years.”

REES will host information sessions for residents on February 12 at 10 a.m. and February 20 at 10 a.m. in the Resident Association Office at 3030 Surf Avenue. Residents of Coney Island Houses, Coney Island I (Sites 4 and 5), and Surfside Gardens who are interested in becoming Jobs-Plus Coney Island members may also call the REES hotline at (718) 289-8100 for more information.
