Project Move-In Helps NYCHA Students Start College with Confidence

For the second year, a special initiative helped make the transition to living away from home at college a little easier for some college-bound NYCHA residents. Thanks to Project Move-In, a program from NYC Service, 60 NYCHA residents received essential items designed to turn their dorm rooms or off-campus housing into comfortable homes.

The students were chosen via an application process and attended the program’s distribution event at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees provided each student with tickets to a game, and Lyft provided ride-share codes to residents who needed help with transportation to the stadium.

Each student received a duffel bag filled with items such as a laptop, wireless earbuds, portable speaker and charger, flash drive, extension cord, shower caddy, twin XL sheet set with comforter, pillow, towel, pop-up hamper, reusable water bottle, and other school-ready necessities.

“As many of us remember from our own college years, starting life on campus requires students to purchase more than just books,” said Audrey Washington, Director of NYCHA’s Office of Public-Private Partnerships. “We are proud to continue our partnership with NYC Service and the New York Yankees, whose generous support and in-kind donations to NYCHA residents in 2025 included a laptop for every selected student. We look forward to expanding access to these valuable resources for even more NYCHA residents in 2026.”
