Paying Rent Is Essential

Dear Residents,

We’d like to remind NYCHA residents about the importance of paying rent.

NYCHA is the city’s largest and most important source of affordable housing, and we remain committed to improving and preserving our communities for our more than 300,000 residents.

It is imperative that all residents pay their rent every month, on time. A critical aspect of NYCHA’s operations budget is resident rent payments. NYCHA relies on these payments to operate and maintain properties and provide services that our residents need.

Additionally, all public housing residents are legally obligated to make monthly rent payments based on household income. Therefore, we encourage you to meet with a Housing Assistant to process an interim or new annual recertification to ensure your rent is sized to match any changes in your household income.

Staying current on this responsibility provides stability for you and your family. Falling behind in rent puts families at risk of hardships such as additional financial strain, potential tenancy proceedings, eviction, and negative impacts to their credit scores after residents have left public housing.

NYCHA’s goal is to keep families housed. If you have fallen behind on your rent, NYCHA can help you get back on track.

Over the past several months, you have probably seen posters about this important issue in the common areas of developments as well as brochures in property management offices. As part of this awareness effort, you may have also received calls and text messages to ensure that all of our public housing families have the information they need to pay their rent, address arrears, remain in good standing, and maintain housing stability.

You may review the information at on.nyc.gov/payrent to learn more about this key responsibility, how to pay your rent, and other support available to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Lisa Bova-Hiatt, Chief Executive Officer
