MTA Buses Will No Longer Take Coins
Later in 2026, MTA buses will no longer accept coins as fare payment. Instead, you can tap and ride using your phone, contactless debit or credit card, or OMNY Card.
You can load an OMNY Card with paper money or coins at OMNY vending machines in subway stations or at stores near you like Walgreens and CVS.
Tapping with your phone, credit or debit card, or OMNY Card makes boarding and riding the bus simpler and faster, and it saves you money through the MTA’s fare-capping program: If you pay for 12 trips with the same device or card in seven days, the rest of your trips in that seven-day period are free.
Learn more about making the switch to OMNY! Vist mta.info/omny, visit an in-station MTA Customer Service Center (locations in all five boroughs are available here), call the OMNY Call Center at 877-789-6669 or 511, or visit an MTA Mobile Sales vehicle (locations and schedules are here).
