NYCHA’s Fall Fire Safety Events

You likely already know what someone’s home in a NYCHA development can look like undamaged, before a fire has mercilessly ripped through that family’s home and life and belongings.

Here is how one looked not long afterward:

This October, NYCHA’s Fire Safety team will use photographs like these to bring the lessons of fire prevention home, featuring them in this year’s Fire Safety Symposia to educate participants about being prepared and how to protect themselves and their neighbors.

The Authority-wide series will extend the activities of Fire Prevention Week across October and into November; it will also bring together prevention education, information about burn injuries (via presentations from nurse practitioners from Cornell’s Burn Unit), and hands-on fire extinguisher training.

The educational work of NYCHA’s Fire Safety Team – which also participates in the “NYCHA In Your Neighborhood” events – complements their everyday responsibilities of maintaining the fire protection systems that help keep NYCHA’s developments safe.

In July, the team visited the FDNY Academy on Randall’s Island to participate in FDNY’s “Firefighter for a Day” program, getting the chance to experience how New York’s firefighters use the fire safety systems the NYCHA team maintains.

They climbed ladders, practiced forcible entry on doors, and pulled heavy hose from fire engines into the Academy’s burn house. And on a Saturday in October, NYCHA’s executive team and NYCHA board members headed to Randall’s Island to do the “Firefighter for a Day” program themselves, providing the Authority’s leadership a close look at NYC firefighters’ daily work while helping to strengthen the relationship between NYCHA and FDNY.
