Annual Notices on Lead-Based Paint, Window Guards, and Stove Knob Covers
Dear Resident,
New York City law requires that you inform NYCHA if a child under 6 years old lives in and/or routinely spends 10 or more hours each week in your apartment. This information determines NYCHA’s next steps for taking protective measures if there is lead-based paint in the apartment.
City law also requires residents to inform NYCHA if a child under 11 years old lives in your apartment so that NYCHA can install missing, or repair damaged, window guards. You can request window guards even if no children live with you.
Additionally, NYCHA must provide stove knob covers or permanent safety knobs if you request them.
Residents can provide this information to NYCHA by responding to the Annual Lead-Based Paint and Window Guard Notice and Stove Knob Cover Annual Notice, which NYCHA mails to your home every January. You can also complete these forms through NYCHA’s online Self-Service Portal: https://selfserve.nycha.info/.
You can choose between a stove knob cover or a permanent safety knob for your oven:
Traditional stove knob cover: Easily installed and removed by residents (including for cleaning), but only child-proofs the burners and oven when in the closed position.
Permanent interlocking stove safety knob: Keeps the stove knobs inaccessible to children at all times, but must be installed and uninstalled by NYCHA staff. They also take more effort for adults to operate and block the temperature markings on knobs.
Please let NYCHA know which stove knob device you prefer when responding to your annual notice. And please return the notice by its due date every year.
Thank you for helping us create safe and healthy communities at NYCHA!
