Celebrating Fathers Across NYCHA
NYCHA residents recently gathered together at festivities with food, music, and fun to celebrate the fathers and father figures in their communities.
With events organized by local resident associations and community partners in honor of Father’s Day on June 16, it was a time for NYCHA’s male role models to take a bow for all their efforts at home and within the neighborhood.
Here are some of the events held this year to celebrate the fathers across NYCHA:
On June 8, the Bay View Houses Community Association in Brooklyn presented “A Celebration of Men” luncheon for residents at the Bay View Community Center. Guest speakers at the event included A.T. Mitchell, founder of the multicultural social services agency Man Up! Inc., and Tony Herbert, citywide public housing liaison in the Office of the Mayor.
On Father’s Day (June 16), the NYC Office of Neighborhood Safety and the nonprofit Exodus Transitional Community sponsored a barbecue and celebration for residents at Wagner Houses in Manhattan. The event, held outside on the Wagner campus, featured food, music, and games. Wagner Houses is one of the 15 NYCHA developments supported by the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP) initiative, which aims to increase safety through coordinated crime reduction efforts.
Also on June 16, residents at Thomas Apartments in Manhattan organized a Father’s Day dinner for community members featuring dancing, music, and special guests. The resident association at Manhattan’s King Towers also honored the fathers and father figures in their community with Father’s Day-related festivities held outside the local community center.
