Fire Prevention Month: Smoke/CO Alarms
In recognition of Fire Prevention Month, NYCHA would like to provide the following information about smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to help keep you and your family safe.
Having a functioning smoke/CO alarm at home can save your life by alerting you when there is a life-threatening fire or carbon monoxide leak.
Combination smoke/CO alarms are installed at NYCHA properties – they detect both smoke and carbon monoxide.
What Should I Do If Hear the Alarm?
• A repeating set of three loud beeps means there’s smoke or fire. Get out immediately and call 911.
• A repeating set of four rapid beeps means there’s a carbon monoxide leak. Get out immediately and call 911.
• A single beep every 45 to 60 seconds means that the battery is low or that there is a problem with the alarm. Contact NYCHA for a replacement.
Alarm Maintenance
• If you have any alarms with removable batteries, contact NYCHA to have them replaced with alarms that contain sealed 10-year batteries.
• NYCHA will replace the alarms every 10 years (or whenever alarms are damaged by a fire or other issue).
• Clean your alarms by dusting them periodically.
• Test your alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
• Keep alarms clean – paint, stickers, or other decorations can interfere with the alarm’s operation.
