Free Tax Prep

With tax season in full swing, NYCHA is offering opportunities for public housing residents and Section 8 voucher holders to file their taxes for free.

For the ninth consecutive year, NYCHA is partnering with the Food Bank For New York City to provide free tax prep services to residents.

From now through April 18 (last day to file), residents who earned $60,000 or less in 2022 can file their taxes for free at any of Food Bank’s participating locations.

“NYCHA’s Resident Economic Empowerment and Sustainability (REES) office has been partnering with Food Bank For New York City since 2014 to provide this important financial resource to NYCHA residents to access quality and free tax preparation services,” said Audrey Washington, Assistant Director for Financial Capability and Resident Business Development at REES. “In 2022, through our partnership, NYCHA residents were able to secure $1.8 million in combined tax refunds, which benefitted their families. We appreciate the Food Bank’s Tax Preparation team for their support of NYCHA residents and their commitment to serving the community.”

In-person, online, and drop-off services are available across the city. Appointments are encouraged for people looking to use in-person services.

“Food Bank For New York City is proud to offer NYCHA and Section 8 residents with free, safe and secure tax filing services to help ensure our neighbors have the income support they need at a time when the demand remains high,” said Zac Hall, Food Bank’s Senior Vice President of Programs. “By providing these resources to NYCHA and Section 8, Food Bank hopes to give residents the opportunity to get money back into their pockets for other needs while ensuring they have one less thing to worry about.”
