NYCHA Cares to Tackle Repair Backlog

Over the next two years, a new NYCHA pilot program will improve quality of life for almost 9,000 residents by addressing more than 50,000 open skilled trades work orders at the three developments with the largest backlogs.

NYCHA Cares is funded thanks to $20 million from Mayor Bill de Blasio and will initially focus on Manhattanville Houses in West Harlem, Queensbridge Houses South in Queens, and Kingsborough Houses in Brooklyn. Through the program, teams of current NYCHA skilled trades employees, temporary staff, and outside vendors will tackle specialized work orders—these kinds of repairs typically have longer wait times because they require the expertise of skilled trade workers, including plumbers, electricians, plasterers, carpenters, and painters.

“Thanks to the unwavering support and unprecedented funding from Mayor de Blasio, NYCHA Cares exemplifies how we can effectively answer repair problems,” explained General Manager Vito Mustaciuolo. “By utilizing current staff, support staffing, and private contracting solutions, we will be able to cut down wait times and make much-needed repairs for our residents.”
