NYCHA Food Vendors on Governors Island for Second Season

For the second year in a row, NYCHA resident food business owners will be on Governors Island at The Foodie Spot selling their delicious food options.

The two-year partnership between NYCHA and the Trust for Governors Island provides NYCHA food business owners with a shipping container with an oven, refrigerator and freezer, and other necessary items to sell food. Governors Island is reachable by ferry and open to visitors from May 1 to October 31.

La Guardia Houses resident Cristiana Franco and her husband Luis Rosario, owners of Sabor Restaurant & Bakery, kicked off the season on May 1 and will be at The Foodie Spot until June 30 offering Dominican and Colombian dishes. Coney Island Houses resident Quiafua Royes, owner of Quiafua’s Kitchen, will operate at The Foodie Spot July 1 through August 31 offering all vegetarian dishes. Queensbridge Houses resident Bernadette Alvelo-Miller, owner of Bernadette’s Place, will close out the season, operating from September 1 to October 31 and offering wings with assorted sauces, her signature salad, and side dishes. NYCHA vendors will operate at The Foodie Spot on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and some Fridays.

The vendors are graduates of the Food Business Pathways program, which was operated by NYCHA’s Office of Resident Economic Empowerment & Sustainability (REES) and provided free business development training to help NYCHA residents and NYCHA Section 8 voucher holders start or grow their own food businesses.

The ferries to Governors Island operated by the Trust for Governors Island are free for NYCHA residents. To learn more about Governors Island and plan a visit, go to Governors Island (govisland.com).
