NYCHA Honored by NYPA as Electrification Leader
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has recognized NYCHA’s work to electrify energy uses at a Manhattan development that is home to nearly 350 residents.
NYCHA was presented with NYPA’s Leader in Building Electrification award at its 2022 Clean Energy Exchange event in Albany on May 11.
The award recognizes a NYCHA heat pump project at 830 Amsterdam Avenue, where the aging gas-and-oil-fueled heating and hot water systems will be replaced with a high-efficiency electric heat pump system. The new heat pump system will be the first of its kind at a public housing development in the Northeast, serving as a model on how to creatively decarbonize high-rise residential buildings in urban areas across the country.
“NYCHA is proud to receive this recognition for our efforts to upgrade heating, cooling, and hot water with modern and reliable technologies that will provide better comfort and clean air for our residents at 830 Amsterdam,” said NYCHA’s Vice President for Energy and Sustainability Vlada Kenniff, who accepted the award from NYPA. “Congratulations to my colleague Oliver Osterwind and his project management team for delivery of this important project.”
The annual Customer Clean Energy Exchange awards are presented to NYPA partners for their leadership and innovation in advancing clean energy projects throughout New York State.
Among NYCHA’s various efforts in support of clean energy, the 1471 Watson Avenue development in the Bronx is slated to become the Authority’s first building to completely electrify all energy uses, such as heating and cooling, domestic hot water, and cooking. The initiative meets the goals of the Authority’s Sustainability Agenda, a roadmap for creating safer and healthier homes for residents across the city.
