NYCHA Supports New Affordable Housing in NYC
NYCHA’s Executive Vice President (EVP) for Leased Housing Lakesha Miller recently participated in three events hosted by partner organizations who opened or are in the process of building new affordable housing in the city. As the largest Section 8 program in the country, NYCHA is providing project-based Section 8 vouchers for these developments to help subsidize rents for each building’s residents.
Grand Opening of Beach Channel Senior Apartments in Far Rockaway:
On November 20, EVP Miller joined Arker Companies, the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), NYC Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Council Member Donovan Richards, and some new residents at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Beach Channel Senior Apartments.
NYCHA provided 153 project-based Section 8 vouchers. The building, part of a plan by Arker Companies to help revitalize the Rockaways after Hurricane Sandy, is 100 percent affordable for low-income seniors and includes 46 apartments for formerly homeless seniors. Residents are provided supportive services from non-profit providers, including counseling, supplemental meals, and health care referrals. The building also features flood-prevention technology, rooftop boilers, a rooftop standby generator, and other resiliency measures.
Grand Opening of 984 Woodycrest Avenue in the Bronx:
On December 5, EVP Miller joined HPD, HELP USA, and CMC Development at the grand opening of 984 Woodycrest Avenue in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. NYCHA provided 48 project-based Section 8 vouchers. The new building has 48 affordable studio apartments, 29 of which are reserved for formerly homeless people, including veterans. Residents can access onsite supportive services from HELP USA, a national homeless service provider and low-income housing developer.
Groundbreaking for 3188 Villa Avenue in the Bronx:
On December 7, EVP Miller joined The Doe Fund, HPD, and others at a groundbreaking for 3188 Villa Avenue in the Bedford Park/Special Grand Concourse District of the Bronx. NYCHA provided 68 project-based Section 8 vouchers to help subsidize rents.
The new building will include 60 studios and 8 one-bedroom apartments; 41 apartments will be reserved for underserved and formerly homeless people and 27 will be reserved for households on NYCHA’s waitlist. The Doe Fund, an organization that provides housing, paid work opportunities, and supportive services to formerly homeless and incarcerated men in New York City, will provide onsite supportive services to residents, including job preparation, employment training, drug/alcohol prevention services, and more. The building is scheduled to open in 2020.
