NYCHA’s Capital Projects Roundup: June
NYCHA’s Capital Projects Division (CPD) marked the completion of two projects at Queens’ Astoria Houses in June that will bring a variety of benefits and improved services for residents and the surrounding community.
CPD oversees more than $1 billion in construction projects across the Authority’s portfolio that are funded with federal, State, and City investments. The department works to preserve and modernize public housing for NYCHA residents through professional design and construction services that are carried out efficiently and with the highest degree of safety and quality.
On June 22, NYCHA finished replacing the roofs on six buildings at Astoria Houses. These new roofs will benefit residents and staff by reducing mold, which can cause asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
As part of the project, crews also replaced the roof of the Astoria Houses Community Center, in addition to replacing two rear canopies next to the lower roof and a side entrance canopy. This $6.4 million project was funded by federal revenue.
Also in June, Astoria Houses celebrated the completion of a $639,000 renovation of the development’s multi-purpose court area. Residents and local community members will have more opportunities to stay active with access to an upgraded multi-purpose track and basketball and tennis court facility.
The recreation space received new painted lines marking the paved track and tennis court boundaries, removable tennis netting, two new backboards for the basketball court, new benches, and a new chain-link fence surrounding the multi-purpose court. This project was financed by City Councilmember Costa Constantinides and federal funds.
