Preschoolers at Smith Houses Compost Food Scraps
The Hamilton-Madison House preschool, located at NYCHA’s Smith Houses in Manhattan, installed a compost bin so preschoolers can compost food scraps from their lunches and snacks. The bin was established with funding from City Council Member Christopher Marte and is maintained by Earth Matter, a non-profit dedicated to advancing composting in the metropolitan area. The finished compost will be used in the Hamilton-Madison House school garden. Efforts like this are part of NYCHA’s sustainability goal to eventually make compost collection services available to all developments.
