Remembering Longtime Wagner Houses Resident, Beloved Community Member Dorothy “Dot” Moore
The NYCHA community is mourning the passing of Dorothy “Dot” Moore, one of the longest residents of NYCHA’s Wagner Houses in East Harlem.
Born on August 13, 1927, in Winterville, North Carolina, Ms. Moore passed away on Easter Sunday on April 9. She was 95.
Ms. Moore raised five children with her husband Louis in Wagner Houses, where she lived for almost 70 years. Known for her perseverance and resilience, Ms. Moore loved her apartment and community and remained in her home until her passing.
An avid card player and travel lover, Ms. Moore was beloved by all who knew her and regularly hosted gatherings at her home, where neighbors would get together for hot meals. “She was not only a second mom to many, but she was a pillar of the community,” said neighbor Claudette Marshall.
“My grandmother was very witty and wise,” said Ms. Moore’s granddaughter Katrina Moore. “She always walked us to the elevator, where she watched us get on when we left. She was the strongest woman I ever met and taught us how to love.”
Ms. Moore leaves behind her three surviving children, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
