Resident Association Dedicates Wyckoff Gardens Room for Computer Training
On May 26, the Wyckoff Gardens Resident Association welcomed a dedicated space for computer learning and other programming at the Brooklyn development.
Wyckoff Gardens residents held a ribbon-cutting celebration to officially open a computer lab room and youth lounge area near the community center. The space – which features 16 tablet computers, seating, tables, and lounge chairs – was supported by SNIPES, a sneaker and streetwear company with stores in Brooklyn.
Valerie Bell, Wyckoff Gardens Resident Association President, said the company wanted to give back to the local neighborhood and “Wyckoff was gratefully chosen” to receive the donated equipment for use by the residents.
“I’m overwhelmed and it’s very appreciated,” said Ms. Bell, a longtime resident and former 19-year NYCHA employee.
The room was previously reserved for after-school programming, but it will now be used by the resident association to help train residents on technology and computer skills. Ms. Bell would also like to offer GED classes and other programming for the community.
“I know a lot of residents and seniors are going to utilize this and I think it’s something that’s very positive,” she said.
Wyckoff Gardens Property Manager Shelisa Reid agreed, noting that many NYCHA services for residents can be accessed online, such as requesting repairs or submitting annual recertifications. For residents who may not own a computer, they now have a place to pick up some new skills, connect with friends and family via social media, or search the web for job opportunities, she said.
“It’s a big benefit for the residents because not only are we trying to educate the youth on creating resumes and prepare them to get jobs, but we’re also trying to assist a lot of the seniors who don’t have access to computers,” said Ms. Reid, who has worked at Wyckoff Gardens for about five years and is also a resident of Breukelen Houses. “It will benefit them to have the simple knowledge of how to maneuver a computer.”
