Staten Island Street Renamed for Late NYCHA Resident Association President
The corner of Gordon Street and Warren Street in Staten Island was recently co-named Geraldine Parker Way in honor of the longtime resident association president of Stapleton Houses, who passed away on September 16, 2024. On a rainy day in early April, Geraldine Parker’s family and friends gathered with community members and elected officials to honor the life and work of Ms. Parker with a street renaming ceremony.
In addition to being a wife and mother of six, Ms. Parker was an advocate for her community. She became president of the Stapleton Houses Resident Association in June 2002 and held the position until she passed away. Her plan was to retire at the end of 2024. At the end of a successful Family Day in August 2024, Ms. Parker said, “I went out with a bang.” As a resident association president, she was dedicated to facilitating programming for the youngest residents of the development and also provided countless food programs for those in need, including a food pantry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The street renaming ceremony was organized by Staten Island Council Member Kamillah Hanks. “Our community came together to honor the life and legacy of Geraldine Parker with the official street co-naming of Geraldine Parker Way,” Council Member Hanks said. “It was a moving tribute to a woman who served as the heart of Stapleton Houses for more than two decades. Geraldine’s fearless advocacy, tireless leadership, and deep love for her neighbors created lasting change.”
