Zipcar Membership for NYCHA Residents

A new partnership between NYCHA and Zipcar provides NYCHA residents with easy, discounted access to short-term car sharing throughout the city.

Unlike ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft, car sharing enables you to book smaller or larger cars depending on your need. There’s never any waiting because you book the car when you know you’ll need it.

Here are the details:

  • Residents who apply for membership before December 31, 2018 will receive a free first year – the standard membership fee is $70. For every subsequent year, the membership fee will be $15. These rates are only available to NYCHA residents.

  • NYCHA residents can reserve a Zipcar at any Zipcar location in the city.

  • Zipcar has an hourly rate and a daily rate, which is the maximum the member can be charged for a 24-hour period. Rates vary based on the size of the car. Fuel and automobile insurance are included.

  • Zipcar has also located cars in parking lot spaces at Brooklyn and Bronx NYCHA developments where transportation options are limited. These spaces are not currently used by NYCHA residents. Any Zipcar member can book a car located at a NYCHA development. When NYCHA residents book these cars, they receive a $1/hour discounted rate.

  • The Brooklyn developments are: Belmont-Sutter (2 cars), Cypress Hills (2 cars), Fiorentino Plaza (3 cars), Glenmore Plaza (3 cars), Marlboro Houses (2 cars), and Pink Houses (2 cars).

  • The Bronx developments are: East 152nd Street-Courtlandt Avenue, Davidson, Randall-Balcom, Throggs Neck Addition, and Marble Hill. These developments will each have two Zipcars.

How to Use Your Zipcar Membership:

  1. Apply online for a membership at www.zipcar.com/nychadeal.

  2. Using the map on the Zipcar site, locate a car near you and reserve it for as long as you need it.

  3. You can unlock the car you reserved using a Zipcard you’ll receive in the mail once your membership has been approved.

  4. If you need the car for longer than you booked, you can extend the time using Zipcar’s mobile phone app or by sending a text message to Zipcar.

  5. Drop off the car at the designated spot when your time is up and lock the car with your Zipcard.
