Bronx Street Co-Named After NYCHA Resident

A street in the Bronx was renamed as a memorial to treasured community member Grace Maldonado, who was a resident leader at two developments in the community.

Grace Maldonado lost her battle with cancer in June 2021. She served as resident association president for South Bronx Area (Site 402) and Union Avenue-East 166th, where she hosted Family Days and advocated for residents. She also built and maintained a community garden at Site 402 that provided educational programs for children, grew produce for residents, and won awards in NYCHA’s Garden and Greening program.

Over the summer, Ms. Maldonado’s family, community members, and elected officials, including Assemblymember Chantel Jackson and Council Member Rafael Salamanca, celebrated her life at an event unveiling the new “Grace Maldonado Way” street sign at the intersection of East 158th Street and Cauldwell Avenue.

The co-naming of the street was sponsored by Assemblymember Chantel Jackson. “Grace Maldonado was a beloved member of the community, and this reputation stemmed from her work advocating for the needs of NYCHA tenants,” Assemblymember Jackson said. “On the one-year anniversary of her passing, my team had the privilege of presenting her with a proclamation and a ceremony to co-name a local street in her honor. Moving forward, ‘Grace Maldonado Way’ will symbolize the charity, kindness, and selflessness she practiced throughout her life.”
