Celebrating Black History Month at Red Hook Houses

Staff at NYCHA’s Red Hook West development celebrated Black History month with an extra special tribute this year – recognition of the Employee of the Month. The award went to Ann Marie Charles Kareem, a caretaker at the development.

“At Red Hook West, we are trying to bring up the morale of staff,” said Angela Purcell, Supervisor of Caretakers at the development. “We want the employees to know that we care about them. We want to show them that their work ethic is awesome, and we appreciate their performance.”

The Employee of the Month award is the first of its kind at the development; Ms. Purcell said they plan to make the recognition of outstanding colleagues a permanent feature going forward.

Ms. Kareem was presented with a certificate, pin, and gift basket. Her selection for the award was based on her attendance record as well as her reputation for going above and beyond in keeping her assigned buildings clean.

“It’s truly a great honor and feeling to receive the title of Employee of the Month for January,” said Ms. Kareem. “I want to thank my supervisor for recognizing my dedication and hard work. I hope that I can continue to prove myself as an asset.”
