NYCHA Residents Get Masked Up

Every day during the week of March 29, Mask Up NYC events were held for NYCHA residents at select developments throughout the five boroughs to distribute face masks and face shields, hand sanitizer, and information on COVID-19 prevention and COVID-19 vaccines.

Mask Up NYC events were held for residents of Mill Brook Houses, Mill Brook Houses Extension, Sack Wern, Clason Point Gardens, Sedgwick Houses, West Tremont Avenue-Sedgwick Avenue, Twin Parks East, Flatbush Gardens (not a NYCHA development), Haber Houses, Tompkins Houses, Bland Houses, South Jamaica I & II, Baisley Park Houses, Todt Hill Houses, Douglass I & II, Douglass Addition Houses, and Wagner Houses.

NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams helped kick off the first event at Mill Brook Houses in the Bronx, and a Mask Up NYC event was held in a different borough each day. Other elected officials who attended the events included Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and City Council Member Adrienne Adams.

In addition to the giveaways, residents were presented with Women’s History Month awards for their work helping their fellow residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Bronx event held at Mill Brook Houses, the honorees were Princella Jamerson, Resident Association President of Mill Brook Houses; Betty J. Dennis, Resident Association Watch Team Member; Karen Adams, Resident Association Vice President of Sedgwick Houses; and Blanca Nieves, Assistant to the President of Twin Parks East Houses Resident Association.

At the Brooklyn Event held at non-NYCHA location Flatbush Gardens, the honorees were Simone Allen, community activist with the Flatbush Gardens Tenant Association; Wendellyn Bunday, Executive Board Member of the Haber Houses Resident Association; and Virginia Thomas, Corresponding Secretary of the Tompkins Houses Resident Association.

At the Queens event held at Baisley Park Houses, the honorees were Janaya Whitehead, Resident Association President for Bland Houses; Melissa Hill-Pinkney, Sergeant of Arms of the South Jamaica Houses Resident Association; and Yameisa Thompson, Former Vice President of the Baisley Park Houses Resident Association. At the Staten Island event held at Todt Hill Houses, the honoree was Doreen M. Williams, Resident Association President of Todt Hill Houses.

At the Manhattan event held at Douglass Houses, the honorees were Carmen Quinones, Resident Association President of Douglass Houses, and Janet Seabrook, Acting Resident Association President of Wagner Houses.
