The Katherine Perez Scholarship

In Memory of a Rising Leader, and a Ray of Sunshine

A scholarship has been created to honor the life of Katherine Perez, a young woman who was a force for positive change in her community.

Ms. Perez was a member of the South Bronx Youth Leadership Council (SBYLC) because she said she “wanted to see change in the community, especially with teens. Teens should be doing something good, helping out those who need it most, especially the elderly.” She passed away in December 2017 at the age of 17, leaving behind family, friends, and neighbors who will always remember her.

The Fund for Public Housing and Capital One created the 2018–2019 Katherine Perez Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 award to be given out in the winter of 2019 to a young person who reflects Ms. Perez’s values of service and dedication to the SBYLC. It is open to current members of the SBYLC or former members of the SBYLC who currently serve as mentors to the SBYLC members; all entrants must have completed 100 hours of community service.
