Unveiling a New Security Camera System at Melrose Houses

On the morning of March 20, residents of the Bronx’s Melrose Houses held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the development’s new closed-circuit TV (CCTV) security camera system. Co-hosted by City Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr., who led the effort to bring the Melrose CCTV system to fruition, the ceremony was attended by South Bronx NYCHA Resident Association Presidents Cassandra Bowlin and Danny Barber, NYCHA staffers, and long-time NYCHA resident Jenny Cruz, among others.

Council Member Rafael Salamanca Jr spoke at the unveiling and showed off the new system’s capabilities.

The Melrose CCTV system and its 157 security cameras were installed thanks to a $3 million allocation from Council Member Salamanca, who noted: “I am very happy to be celebrating the newly installed CCTV security cameras at the Melrose Houses. While this project has been years in the making, I am grateful for all the assistance provided by NYCHA, and the persistence of RA President Bowlin, in seeing it across the finish line. With these cameras, we are finally bringing a sense of security long-promised to Melrose residents, while setting a precedent for updated safety systems to be mainstream in all City housing residences.”
