Apply Now for Affordable Housing at Betances Senior Residence

Applications are being accepted now through August 9 for affordable senior apartments at the Betances Senior Residence in the Bronx.

Located at 142nd Street and East 143rd Streets, between Willis and Brook Avenues, the Betances Senior Residence features 151 apartments for extremely low- and very low-income seniors, including 47 apartments set aside for formerly homeless people and 26 apartments set aside for NYCHA residents. There are also a percentage of apartments set aside for seniors with mobility and vision and/or hearing impairments. Eligible residents will pay 30 percent of their income for rent and will need to qualify for Section 8.

Set to open later this year, the new building was led by development team Breaking Ground. The development will feature outdoor and indoor community spaces and programming for residents, including a community facility. On-site social services, including medical and psychiatric care, will be provided by Breaking Ground’s services partner, the Center for Urban Community Services. The building will also have a laundry room, fitness room, computer room, library, community room, and landscaped courtyard.

Betances Senior Residence is being constructed through the Extremely Low & Low-Income Affordability Program of the New York City Housing Development Corporation, the Senior Affordable Rental Apartments Program of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and NYCHA. This is also Breaking Ground’s first Passive House building, an energy use standard that aims to maximize resident comfort while helping move the City even further toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Applications must be submitted by August 9, 2021. Interested NYCHA residents may apply by visiting the NYC Housing Connect website here. In order to qualify for the NYCHA preference, interested residents should select the option that their current residence is a NYCHA property when entering their address information in the Household Location section of their profile. It is recommended that applicants create an account and apply on the NYC Housing Connect website so that they may receive confirmation of application of submission.
