Fulton Houses Resident Wins Citi Bike Art Contest

Jneyde Williams, a resident of Fulton Houses, was chosen as one of the winners of the Citi Bike Design Contest. The 22-year-old artist will have her artwork featured on Citi Bike stations in Manhattan at Fulton, Dyckman, and Wagner Houses.

In addition to her art being showcased at Citi Bike service areas in Manhattan, she received a $500 prize. Jneyde was one of four winners; the other three winners will have their art displayed in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. To view the winning entries, visit this link

“I am very honored to have everyday New Yorkers see my artwork,” Jneyde said. “I hope this piece will brighten someone’s day as they become lost in my work. I also hope that other young artists will see this piece and become inspired and stay encouraged. Seeing my artwork installed in public spaces has allowed me to feel like a piece of myself has been imprinted into the city. It’s motivating to see my art progressing.”

On November 16, Citi Bike unveiled Jneyde’s winning design at Fulton Houses. In addition to the winners and representatives from Lyft, also in attendance were Senator Brad Hoylman, Fulton Houses Resident Association President Miguel Acevedo, and NYCHA’s Senior Director of Resident Initiatives Shanna Castillo.

Jneyde is a junior at FIT studying animation and motion graphics (she previously graduated from the Borough of Manhattan Community College). After college, she wants to create animated television shows and illustrate books. Last year, she won the Brooklyn Public Library’s Black American library card design contest celebrating Juneteenth and the African American Heritage Center at Macon Library – her winning design was featured on a limited-edition library card. Two of her pieces were also selected to be displayed on Jumbotrons at The Shops at SkyView, a mall in Queens, to celebrate Asian history. Over the summer, Citi Bike opened the contest asking riders to submit artwork inspired by how Citi Bike connects them with their communities. The contest promoted Citi Bike’s $5 per month reduced fare bike-share membership, presented by Healthfirst. Members of Citi Bike’s Equity Advisory Board selected the winners based on originality, skill, and inspiration. Jneyde heard about the contest through NYCHA’s Resident Services, Partnerships & Initiatives (RSPI) monthly e-newsletter for residents.

“Partners like Citi Bike and Lyft are instrumental in leveling the playing field around equitable bike share access for NYCHA residents,” said NYCHA Interim CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt. “These organizations also recognize the importance of enlisting the dazzling array of talented visual artists among NYCHA residents to provide their perspective on the value of these programs. We are delighted that Fulton Houses resident Jneyde Williams has been selected for this exciting campaign and look forward to seeing her artwork displayed at Citi Bike locations.”

Citi Bike has the largest reduced fare bike-share program in the country, with more than 15,000 active members.
